Back when I was a 4th year medical student almost 10 years ago, I did an away rotation in Denver. Fast-forward to this year, I had a chance to visit the state again for a long YOLO weekend. I came away with one recommendation – Explore Colorado! The state’s vibrant culture, outdoor adventures, and thriving urban scene, makes it an ideal destination for anyone seeking rejuvenation and excitement.
One of Colorado’s greatest appeals is its access to nature. Just a short drive from Denver lies the majestic Rocky Mountains, offering endless opportunities for hiking, skiing, snowboarding, and mountain biking. Whether it’s tackling the challenging hikes of Rocky Mountain National Park or simply enjoying a leisurely stroll through one of the state’s many trails, Colorado provides an unparalleled connection to the great outdoors. I had a chance to check out the Paint Mines – a hidden gem of brightly-hued clay formations just east of Colorado Springs that was truly spectacular.
For those with a taste for adventure, Colorado offers plenty of adrenaline-pumping activities. From white-water rafting on the Arkansas River to rock climbing in nearby Clear Creek Canyon, there’s no shortage of opportunities to get the heart racing. And for the ultimate thrill-seekers, epic powder days are just a short drive away as Colorado is home to some of the world’s best winter sports destinations. Although I didn’t partake do these activities over the weekend, I am sure to take advantage of it next time I’m in town.
Beyond the natural beauty, Colorado also boasts a thriving arts and culture scene. Denver itself is home to numerous museums, galleries, and theaters, showcasing everything from contemporary art to historical artifacts. Visitors can immerse themselves in the vibrant street art of the RiNo district, catch a live performance at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre, or explore the eclectic shops and eateries along the 16th Street Mall. Although Downtown Denver looked like an endless construction zone, it was still a pleasure experiencing the scene.
Of course, no visit to Colorado would be complete without sampling its renowned food scene. From farm-to-table bistros to innovative food halls, the state offers a diverse array of dining options to suit every palate. I was particularly drawn to Cholon – a fusion Asian concept in Denver. Visitors can indulge in locally sourced cuisine and sample tons of microbreweries.
But perhaps what sets this place apart is its welcoming atmosphere and spirit of adventure. Whether exploring Boulder’s historic landmarks, mingling with locals at a cool brewery, or embarking on an outdoor excursion, there’s a palpable sense of excitement and possibility in the Mile High State.
Colorado offers the perfect prescription for those looking to escape the ordinary and embrace life to the fullest. Although I was only in town for 4 days, it whizzed by quickly! With its unparalleled natural beauty, thriving cultural scene, and boundless opportunities for adventure, the the Centennial State is sure to leave visitors feeling refreshed, inspired, and ready to take on the world.
